Some are minivans, and some are SUVs, some even offer all-wheel-drive. And if you are looking for value, all the vehicles on our list are affordably priced with Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices between just under $30,000 CDN to under $37,000 CDN. Based on the most expensive to least, check out Kelley Blue Book Canada’s 10 Most Affordable 3-Row Vehicles for 2020.

10th place: 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

The base, front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2020 Volkswagen Atlas mid-size SUV starts at $36,720 CDN in Trendline trim and is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine making 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Combined city and highway fuel economy is estimated at 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). All-wheel-drive (AWD) is optional. The Volkswagen’s 2nd-row seats can fold and slide forwar with the optional pair of captain’s chairs found in the $49,940 CDN Highline trim. Behind the 3rd-row is a still-generous 583 litres of cargo area, which expands to an impressive 2,741 litres with the rear seats folded.

9th place: 2020 Honda Odyssey

Even in base $36,290 CDN LX trim, the 2020 Honda Odyssey minivan offers seats for up to eight onboard. The clever Magic Slide 2nd-row seats allow easy pass-through access. Two adults and a child can fit in the Odyssey’s 3rd-row, which flips and disappears into the deep cargo hold for 2,781 litres of cargo space; 1,688 more litres than when the Honda minivan’s 3rd-row seats are in use. All Odysseys are FWD with a 3.5-litre 6-cylinder engine making 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque with a standard 10-speed automatic transmission that scores a 10.6 L/100 km fuel economy estimate.

8th place: 2020 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse mid-size SUV is one of the roomier mid-size SUVs you can buy. The base, FWD $36,198 CDN Traverse can seat up to eight passengers. Higher trims with 2nd-row captain’s chairs seat seven. Power comes from a 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque 3.6-litre 6-cylinder engine attached to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is estimated at 11.1 L/100 km. AWD is optional. The standard Smart Slide function allows the right side of the 2nd-row bench seat or the right captain’s chair to slide and tilt forward to maximize 3rd-row access. Adults can easily fit into the Chevy SUV’s 3rd-row seats. Measuring 652 litres, the space behind the 3rd-row seat is generous. Folding the rear seats creates 1,637-litres of a cargo room.

7th place: 2020 Toyota Sienna

As a minivan, the 2020 Toyota Sienna easily solves the issue of seeking a vehicle that can seat more than five. Starting at $35,750 CDN, the Sienna LE can accommodate up to eight passengers. Overall, the Toyota minivan is seriously spacious. There’s up to 1,107 litres of cargo space behind the 3rd-row and 2,466 when the seats are folded. There’s just one engine in the Sienna, a 3.5-litre 6-cylinder making 296 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, and one transmission as well, an 8-speed automatic. Fuel economy is estimated at 11.0 L/100 km. The basic setup is FWD, but AWD is optional—a feature rival minivans do not offer.

6th place: 2020 Kia Sorento

In the popular mid-size SUV segment, the AWD 2020 Kia Sorento comes in on the smaller side of the scale, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There are 320 litres of cargo space behind the 3rd-row and 1,076 with the seats down. The base, 2-row Sorento LX starts at $30,995. You’ll have to pay an additional $2,000 CDN for the LX+ trim to get seating for seven passengers. Compared to the base model’s 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic, all 3-row Sorentos receive a 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque 3.3-litre 6-cylinder mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, estimated at 11.1 L/100 km.

5th place: 2020 Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon

The Passenger Wagon is the people mover member of the 2020 Ford Transit Connect minivan family that also comes as a two-passenger Cargo model. Whereas the $29,475 CDN Cargo XL version can seat as few as two passengers, the $32,055 CDN 3-row Wagon XL seats up to seven. Higher trims offer captain’s chairs in the 2nd-row, reducing seating capacity to six. One powertrain is available: a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with 162 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque with an 8-speed automatic transmission, rated at an economical 9.2 L/100 km estimate. The FWD Transit Connect Wagon’s 3rd-row seats can flip, fold or be removed for extra versatility. There are 463 litres of space with the rear seats in use, 1,701 when folded. Buyers have a choice of side-hinged double rear doors or a liftgate.

3rd place (tie): 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan

Due to end production this year, the 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan continues to be an affordable people hauler with pricing starting at $31,995 CDN. Seating is limited to seven passengers, versus the available eight seats found in rivals. Even with the standard Stow n’ Go 2nd-row seats (that fold into the floor to create a flat load space), there is only room for two, just like with the optional bucket seats. With either setup, the 3rd-row is a bench that accommodates up to three passengers. Cargo space behind the 3rd-row is 881 litres and grows to 2,234 when folded. All Grand Caravans are FWD and powered by a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder engine that is good for 283 horsepower and 260  pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with an estimated 11.8 L/100 km rating.

3rd place (tie): 2020 Kia Sedona

Identically priced as the Dodge minivan, the $31,995 CDN 2020 Kia Sedona minivan offers a lot of value if you need to transport the gang. Yet even in base form, it’s hardly a stripped-down model. The FWD Sedona offers only one engine: a 3.3-litre 6-cylinder that provides 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque with fuel economy estimated at 9.1 L/100 km. Depending on the 2nd-row configuration of bench or captain’s chair seating, the Sedona provides 3-row seating that can hold either seven or eight passengers. Even the rearmost bench is okay for adults over short distances. The standard Slide-N-Stow 2nd-row seats quickly and easily slide forward and upright, while the 3rd-row stows under the floor hallowing for 2,220 litres of cargo space—1,260 more than when the seats are in use.

2nd place: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander

Starting at $29,998 CDN, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander compact SUV is a solid choice if you need to haul seven passengers on a budget (except for the Outlander Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle, which is a 5-seater). One of the few compact SUVs available with a 3rd-row seat, the Outlander may be ordered with front- or optional all-wheel drive. Access to the 3rd-row is easy. Fold down both rows of seats, and there are more than 968 litres of available cargo space. With the 3rd-row folded down, there are 292 litres of space. The base powertrain is a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine that makes 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 9.1 L/100 km.

1st place: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

Like the Mitsubishi Outlander, the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is a rare compact SUV to offer the option of a small but still usable 3rd-row seat to accommodate up to seven passengers. In the base, FWD Trendline trim, at $29,995 CDN (that includes the $750 3rd--row option), the VW beats out the Mitsubishi as the most affordable 3-row 2020 vehicle you can buy. The sole transmission is an 8-speed automatic, hooked up to a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, estimated to return 9.4 L/100 km fuel economy. In back, the VW’s 2nd-row seat slides and reclines, divided in a 40/20/40-split for maximum versatility. With the 3rd-row seats in use, there are 340 litres of cargo space. Drop them down, and there’s a more usable 935 litres of cargo room.
