Although many 4-door vehicles and SUVs are marketed as “coupés,” the original automotive definition refers to passenger cars with only two doors. Today, there are plenty of luxury 2-door coupés at the high end of the market. However, for buyers on a budget, based on starting Manufacturer Suggested Retail Prices, we’ve listed from most to least expensive the 10 most affordable new coupés for 2020.

10th place: 2020 BMW 2 Series Coupé - $39,950 CDN

Channelling the German brand's iconic 2002 from the late-1960s, the 4-passenger 2020 BMW Series Coupé is a real driver's car, offering an impressive power-to-weight ratio, snug seats and legendary BMW ride and handling. A compact, nimble performance coupé with tidy proportions and luxury-brand pedigree, the base 230i Coupé comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, rear-wheel-drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. An 8-speed automatic gearbox and AWD are optional.

9th place: 2020 Dodge Challenger - $34,895.00 CDN

Among the traditional trio of American brand coupés on our list, the 5-passenger 2020 Dodge Challenger offers the most daily-driver practicality. Built on the same platform as the Dodge Charger 4-door sedan, the retro-styled Challenger can seat three passengers in the back and offer a larger trunk than its Detroit 2+2 passenger rivals. The base rear-wheel-drive Dodge offers more cylinders under its long hood as standard equipment, with a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder that makes 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

8th place: 2020 Ford Mustang Fastback - $31,080 CDN

The 2020 Ford Mustang Fastback remains a top pick for coupé buyers on a budget. The base Fastback EcoBoost trim comes with a turbocharged 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine that puts out a competitive 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, while a 10-speed automatic is optional. With a traditional rear-wheel-drive setup, this latest generation of Mustang is the most sophisticated ever when it comes to its ride and handling characteristics. For front occupants, the Ford coupé is roomy enough, and most of the controls are easily reached. Trunk space is useful too.

7th place: 2020 Nissan 370Z Coupé - $30,498 CDN

For 2020, the 2-passenger Nissan 370Z is offered as a hardtop only with the cancellation of the convertible Zed. However, the Z-car's main selling point is still the same: there's nothing else this sporty, with this much power at these prices. A 3.7-litre 6-cylinder propels the car with 332 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque going to the rear wheels. A 6-speed manual is standard (a 7-speed automatic is optional), along with Nissan's Synchrorev Match technology that revs the engine for ultra-smooth downshifts. The 370Z's seats are comfortable, and the rear hatch area provides sufficient luggage space for two golf bags.

6th place: 2020 Toyota 86 - $30,150 CDN

With a seating position set low to the ground, the 2020 Toyota 86 is a rear-wheel-drive, 4-passenger sports coupé that entertains drivers with a superb chassis that’s poised and responsive, agile and light. The lone power choice is a Subaru-sourced 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine (that contributes to the 86’s advantageously low center of gravity), making 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. Opt for the 6-speed automatic gearbox, and the engine makes 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

5th place: 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Coupé - $29,448 CDN

The 6th-generation of the 4-passenger 2020 Chevrolet Camaro is smaller and lighter than ever before, delivering handling more in line with what you might expect of a European sports coupé. With 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the base Camaro 1LS trim matches the output of a V8 Camaro from a few generations back. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard and an 8-speed automatic optional. Modern touches like heated seats and a touch-screen infotainment system bring the Chevy muscle coupé into the 21st century.

4th place: 2020 Subaru BRZ - $27,995 CDN

Along with the nearly identical Toyota 86, the 2020 Subaru BRZ is in a sparsely populated category of value-filled coupés with an emphasis on driver appeal. Contrary to how Toyota markets its 86, the base model of Subaru’s 4-passenger BRZ rear-wheel-drive sports coupé comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters mounted to the steering column. The driving enthusiast-oriented 6-speed manual is available in the $3,400 CDN more expensive Sport-tech trim. Like the Toyota, the Subaru is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque with the automatic.

3rd place: 2020 Mini 3 Door - $24,590 CDN

While many upscale coupés justify their higher prices with luxury features like classier materials and a quiet ride, the front-wheel-drive 4-passenger Mini 3 Door (the “third door” is the rear hatch) brings driving excitement into its value equation (thanks in part to parent company BMW’s input), along with distinctive design and the ability to personalize. In base form, the Mini comes with a turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine making 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque matched to a 7-speed automatic transmission that provides plenty of pep in this small, lightweight vehicle.

2nd place: 2020 Hyundai Veloster - $22,449 CDN

Unlike most small coupés, the 4-passenger 2020 Hyundai Veloster distinguishes itself by a unique third rear door on the passenger side. Although this design doesn’t detract from the front-wheel-drive Veloster’s overall coupé looks, the extra aperture makes it easier for people and cargo to move in and out of the rear seat. In base trim, the Veloster comes with a 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Overall, the Veloster feels light on its feet and is easy to drive quickly, but also has a stiff feel to the body and chassis.

1st place: 2020 Honda Civic Coupé - $20,690 CDN

Part of the top-selling Civic family, the 2020 Honda Civic Coupé is the most affordable new coupé in Canada. The front-wheel-drive Civic 2-door’s appeal is beyond its low price point. Base models are powered by a 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that’s quite energetic, especially with the standard 6-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable automatic transmission is an option. This generation of Civic, the 10th, has evolved the notion of a compact car to the point where virtually everything is well considered. Interior space is among the best in the compact-car class, and ergonomics are spot-on, providing comfort and ease of use for drivers of most shapes and sizes.
