Buyer’s Guide: Every New Compact Luxury SUV for 2022

These small SUVs are some of Canada's most popular new luxury vehicles, offering utility, performance, and style.

No longer is the sedan the go-to for luxury buyers. A recipe of taller seating, available traction at all four wheels, extra ground clearance, plenty of luxury features—and maybe a hint of driving performance—are just some of the reasons why almost every luxury brand has a compact SUV in their lineup. These small-but-luxurious SUVS seem to have the correct value equation for many buyers, a little larger than the growing crop of sub-compact luxury SUVs.

Alphabetically, we’ve listed every new compact luxury SUV available in Canada for 2022. If you’re looking for more details or ready to buy, click on the model name link to find the relevant Kelley Blue book® Value.

Acura RDX

Base MSRP: $45,800 CAD

The 2022 Acura RDX is more affordable than most of its rivals, with incredible Acura reliability and build quality on its side, enjoying strong resale values as a result. Yet the 5-passenger Acura still engages behind the steering wheel and is packed with standard equipment. Every RDX has a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gas engine making 272 horsepower and all-wheel-drive (AWD) standard. A 10-speed automatic transmission has pretty much the most ratios engineers can squeeze into a gearbox.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Base MSRP: $55,500 CAD

Drivers looking for something on the sporty side of compact luxury SUVs should test drive the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. From its exotic styling to its exciting performance, the 5-passenger AWD Stelvio has the soul of a sports car and the body and interior of an SUV. The base 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder is a class leader in horsepower (280) and torque (306 pound-feet). A Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with 505 hp powers the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Audi Q4 e-tron

Base MSRP: $59,950 CAD

The 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron is an all-new, battery-electric luxury compact SUV. The drivetrain employs two electric motors, one for each axle, creating AWD via a single-speed transmission. The combined output is 295 hp and an estimated 388 kilometres of driving range. Using a 240-volt outlet, the 5-passenger Q4 e-tron can take up to nine hours for a full recharge.

Audi Q5

Base MSRP: $48,000 CAD

The 2022 Audi Q5 is a prime example of a compact luxury SUV. It has the manners, tech, AWD, refinement, and (arguably) the style that appeals to a fortunate set of potential buyers who have several wonderful choices. In addition to the base 261-hp 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine, a 362-hp plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with up to 31 km of driving range and the sporty 349 hp turbo-V6 SQ5 are also available.

BMW X3

Base MSRP: $52,990 CAD

The BMW X3 has received a revamp for 2022. The base xDrive30i gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gas engine developing 248 hp. The M40i has a 3.0-litre turbo-6 with 382 hp and various performance hardware. A new addition for 2022 is a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The xDrive30e PHEV makes 288 hp and can be driven on electricity alone for up to 29 km. All versions of the X3 have seats for five and use an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD.

Buick Envision

Base MSRP: $35,698 CAD

If you still get sticker shock from SUVs from rival luxury brands, then the 2022 Buick Envision may be just right. Straddling the line between mainstream and luxury, the 5-passenger Envision is an upscale SUV that’s priced in a way that makes it attainable. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, AWD is optional. The sole engine (a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder with 230 hp) perfectly moves this SUV. The 9-speed automatic transmission is smooth and more satisfying than a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Cadillac XT5

Base MSRP: $44,298 CAD

The 2022 Cadillac XT5 straddles the line between compact and mid-size. That’s good for buyers because they can have plenty of space for up to five passengers without paying extra for a larger SUV. The base engine is a 2.0-litre turbo 4-cylinder developing 237 hp, with FWD standard, AWD optional. The available 3.6-litre V6 with 310 hp gets AWD standard. Each engine connects to a 9-speed automatic. Both engines have a stop/restart function to save a few drops of fuel.

Genesis GV70

Base MSRP: $49,500 CAD

All-new for 2022, the Genesis GV70 uses the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the G70 compact luxury sedan. The AWD GV70’s pair of turbocharged 2.5-litre 4-cylinder and 3.5-litre V6 engines are shared with the larger GV80. But with less weight to haul around, the GV70 is currently the most thrilling SUV in the Genesis lineup. “Gorgeous” is an appropriate description for the 5-passenger GV70’s interior. Inspired by the cross-section of an airplane wing, the cabin is filled with ellipse-shaped elements.

Infiniti QX50

Base MSRP: $47,995 CAD

The 2022 Infiniti QX50 has a roomy and well-designed 5-passenger interior, drives smoothly, comes with a lot of standard safety systems, starts at a reasonable price, and wraps it all up with an arguably good-looking exterior. Its front seats are comfortable. And they only become plusher in line with the trim levels when perforated semi-aniline leather comes on board, sporting a quilted effect in the top model. The sole engine is a 268 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder.

Land Rover Discovery Sport

Base MSRP: $52,300 CAD

The 2023 Land Rover Discovery Sport  is the smallest and most affordable vehicle in the Land Rover stable. Business-like, with a touch of class and a dash of design flair. That’s the Discovery Sport’s cabin. The quality of materials is suitably premium, as is the fit and finish, and there’s room for up to seven passengers with the optional 3rd-row seating. A turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine propels the Discovery Sport with 246 hp. The power goes to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Base MSRP: $64,600 CAD

Easily maneuverable in the city yet spacious enough for a well-off family of five, the 2022 Range Rover Velar has more contemporary styling than the larger Range Rover Sport. A turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gas engine developing 247 hp is standard, while a 3.0-litre turbo-6 with 335 hp (augmented by a mild hybrid system) is optional. Regardless of engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission is deployed. Along with AWD, Land Rover’s All Terrain Progress Control (like cruise control for slippery conditions) is standard.

Lexus NX

Base MSRP: $47,400 CAD

For 2022, the 5-passenger Lexus NX received a wider range of engines and overdue updates to its infotainment system. The most affordable NX 250 trim gets a 203-hp 2.5-litre 4-cylinder gas engine, AWD, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 2.4-litre turbo-4 powers the NX 350 with 275 hp. The mild-hybrid NX 350h pairs a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors for a combined 240 hp. The newest NX is the 450h+—Lexus’ first PHEV—providing a total of 304 hp and up to 61 km of electric driving.

Lincoln Corsair

Base MSRP: $45,600 CAD

The 2022 Lincoln Corsair borrows some of the best elements of its bigger Aviator and Navigator stablemates while having its own personality. The cabin of the AWD 5-passenger Lincoln coddles its driver and passengers in a quiet, serene sanctuary. Combined with a smooth and compliant suspension, it makes for a luxurious drive. There are three engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder with 250 hp; a 295 hp 2.3-litre (both use an 8-speed automatic transmission); and a PHEV with a total system output of 266 hp, a CVT, and up to 45 km of all-electric range.

Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

Base MSRP: $50,900 CAD

Drivers looking for the excellence of the Mercedes-Benz brand packaged as a practical compact SUV will be delighted by the 2022 GLC-Class. The interior of the 5-passenger GLC is spacious and versatile but still luxurious and high-tech. The base 255 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine delivers a satisfying balance of eager performance and good fuel economy. The GLC 43’s 385 hp AMG-tuned 3.0-litre V6 is an exciting SUV that provides a significant boost in power. A 9-speed automatic transmission and AWD come with every GLC-Class.

Porsche Macan

Base MSRP: $58,500 CAD

If you like the idea of the style, luxury, and performance of a Porsche packaged as a practical SUV, then you’ll love the 5-passenger Macan. For 2022, the AWD Macan has received a facelift, and the model range has been shuffled around a bit. With the 261 hp, base 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine, you won’t feel like you’re missing anything until you try the 375-hp Macan S (twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6) or the 434-hp variant of the same engine in the GTS. All Macans use a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a knack for always being in the right gear.

Jaguar F-Pace

Base MSRP: $61,600 CAD

Drivers looking for a practical SUV with some panache should consider the 2022 Jaguar F-Pace: an SUV with the driving character of a sport sedan. Its 5-passenger cabin is roomy and comfortable. Technology is user-friendly. And the driving experience is that of a smaller, sportier car. The four different gas engines include a 247-hp 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 355-hp 3.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged mild-hybrid 6-cylinder, and a 5.0-litre V8 with 550-hp. Each is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD.

Jaguar I-Pace

Base MSRP: $99,800 CAD

The 2022 Jaguar I-Pace is a battery-electric SUV that can run for approximately 380 km between charges. It’s a thrill to drive, has plenty of visual impact, excellent infotainment tech, and that special Jaguar class. Balancing a substantial amount of tech with the upscale ambience of a luxury SUV, the I-Pace has a friendly, 5-passenger cabin with quality materials. Each axle has its electric motor for a standard AWD system. The total output is 394 hp. That’s a lot, particularly in a small SUV with an aluminum-intensive construction.

Tesla Model Y

Base MSRP: $79,590 CAD

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is an SUV version of the battery-electric Tesla Model 3 sedan with similar styling inside and out, engaging performance, and excellent range. The significant differences are a standard dual-motor, AWD configuration, a roomier interior, and optional 3-row seating. The base Long Range offers an estimated 447 hp, up to 525 km of range, and optional 3rd-row seats, while the estimated 580-hp Performance trim has quicker acceleration and a higher top speed, but it also has a lower range (488-km), and a higher price tag.

Volvo XC60

Base MSRP: $50,750 CAD

The 2022 Volvo XC60 is a safe and practical choice in compact luxury SUVs. It carries the Volvo reputation for safety with an impressive list of standard driver assistance tech features. Safety isn’t the only thing the 5-passenger XC60 is good at. Its new, turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder mild-hybrid engine strike a satisfying balance of performance (in 247-hp or 295-hp tune) and efficiency. For better performance and a smaller carbon footprint, the XC60 Recharge PHEV uses the same powertrain but a larger battery for up to 31 km of electric driving.
