The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is now three years into its latest generation, known as the JL. It continues to be offered as a 2-door/4-passenger mid-size SUV or the more popular and roomier 4-door/5-passenger Unlimited version. All Wranglers come with a soft-top that can be removed (along with the doors) for open-air adventures. An optional hardtop and a hardtop with a panoramic retractable sunroof are also available.
Today’s Jeep Wrangler is a satisfying mix of classic design and real-deal off-road chops with modern safety systems, amenities, and technology. All Wranglers are 4-wheel-drive and offer a choice of four engines. Standard is a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder that makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard. Most buyers, however, will want the optional 8-speed automatic transmission. Or buyers can opt for a spunky turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder generating 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Optional on the 4-door Unlimited is a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 that has good horsepower (260) and even better torque (442 lb-ft). It comes standard with an 8-speed automatic.
New for 2021 is the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe, a plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid Jeep with an estimated 34 kilometres of electric-only range. It pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Total output is estimated at 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, making the 4xe the most potent Wrangler in the lineup (that is, until the 470-hp/470-lb-ft Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-litre V8 arrives later in 2021.)
There are a plethora of trim levels across all 2021 Jeep Wrangler models. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRPs) start at $37,070 CDN for the base 2-door Wrangler in Sport trim. The 4-door Unlimited starts at 45,865 CDN in Sport S trim, while the Unlimited 4xe plug-in hybrid starts at $54,995 CDN in base Sahara trim.
