Which 2022 GMC Terrain is Right for You?

GMC’s compact SUV is updated for 2022; check out which trim level best suits your driving needs.

What Is the 2022 GMC Terrain?

Almost every automaker has a compact SUV in its lineup, but the GMC Terrain is one entry that stands out in its crowded segment. It’s a good execution of the GMC brand DNA that is both rugged and refined and one of the most affordable models in its segment.

The updated 2022 Terrain takes an often overlooked SUV and makes it more interesting. A new AT4 model has been added with an emphasis on off-road capability. The range-topping Denali model is an appealing and more affordable alternative to a similarly appointed SUV from a luxury brand. Additionally, the look has been updated for the whole model range, with some new technology.
How Much Does the GMC Terrain Cost?

The 2022 Terrain only comes with one engine and transmission combination. So, the big decisions are if you want the power going to the front wheels or all four and how much optional equipment you can afford.

Across four trim levels, the most affordable Terrain, the front-wheel drive SLE, starts with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $30,598 in Canadian dollars. Standard equipment highlights include GMC's Pro Safety suite, dual-zone automatic climate control, Keyless Open and Start, LED headlamps and taillamps, and 17-inch Silver painted aluminum wheels.

An all-wheel drive SLE starts at $32,998. But the remaining Terrains come with AWD standard, starting with the $35,598 SLT trim. Over the SLE, the SLT adds equipment like leather seating and steering wheel, a larger GMC Infotainment System, and remote start.

The more specialized Terrain AT4 and Denali trims (read more below) round out the lineup.

All 2022 Terrains get a 3-year/60,000-kilometre limited factory warranty.

What Are the Terrain’s Power and Fuel Economy Ratings?

As mentioned, the 2022 Terrain has one engine choice. It’s a gas-only 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes enough power to get around (170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque) but doesn’t offer much excitement.

If good fuel economy is more important to you than performance, you’ll have no complaints about this engine. Front-wheel drive versions get an 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres city and highway combined estimate, while AWD comes with a slight fuel economy penalty of 9.0 L/100 km.

What’s the GMC’s Interior Like?

The interior of the 5-passenger GMC Terrain has truck-like simplicity but a decidedly upscale nature. Inspired by its bigger, more expensive stablemates like the full-size GMC Sierra truck and Yukon SUV, the inside of the Terrain is a pleasant place to be with user-friendly controls and tech features.

Interior space is good for both rows of seats. However, cargo space is a little tight, with only 838 litres behind the rear seats. If you’re not planning on regularly hauling a lot of gear, it won’t be an issue, but if you’re looking for maximum space from a compact SUV, you may want to look elsewhere.

What Are Some of the GMC compact SUV’s Best Features?

RUGGED AT4 MODEL: We like what we’ve seen so far from GMC’s AT4 sub-brand, and we’re glad the Terrain has joined the club. The new $36,198 Terrain AT4 isn’t an insane off-roader, but it can tackle moderate off-roading while looking great doing it. It’s great for drivers looking for an SUV that rarely leaves the pavement but is still up for an adventure.

PREMIUM DENALI MODEL : The $41,598 Terrain Denali gives more expensive compact luxury SUVs a serious run for their money. Not only does the Denali trim offer a premium look and feel inside and out, but it’s loaded with modern technology like a colour head-up display, the GMC Pro Safety Plus system, and a premium suspension with enhanced shock control.

What’s the 2022 GMC Terrain’s Competition?

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is very similar to the Terrain. Both General Motors compact SUVs have a comparable list of standard and available features, about the same amount of passenger and cargo room, and identical engines. Other rivals include the usual suspects, such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4.
