Which 2022 Honda Passport is Right for You?

Find out which of Honda’s mid-size SUV trims best fits your needs.

Honda re-introduced the Passport nameplate for the 2019 model year as a more rugged counterpart to its family-friendly Pilot. The Passport is mechanically and aesthetically similar to Honda’s mid-size truck, the Ridgeline, with the big difference being that it’s an SUV rather than a pickup.

As a 2-row/5-passenger mid-size SUV, the Passport offers more space than a compact SUV like Honda’s CR-V. That also means it’s a bit smaller than the 7- to 8-passenger Pilot. That makes the Passport just-right-sized for drivers who want an SUV with a roomy interior for passengers and cargo but don’t need three rows of seats.

The 2022 Passport shares its lone powerplant, a 3.5-litre 6-cylinder gas engine, with several other Honda models. The V-6 has a proven reputation as a robust, efficient, and reliable engine. It makes 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque.

A 9-speed automatic transmission comes standard on every Passport. It does an excellent job delivering quick and smooth shifts that you’ll barely notice. The standard torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system improves the all-weather traction of the Honda and enhances its off-road capabilities.

Several rivals have a standard 4-cylinder gas engine that’s more fuel-efficient, but the Passport’s 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres combined city and highway fuel economy estimate is about average for a V-6 in this class. Plus, it allows for a towing capacity of either 3,500 or 5,000 pounds (1,588 or 2,268 kilograms) when properly equipped. That’s enough muscle to tow a small camper, a fishing boat, a couple of snowmobiles, and much more.

As you might expect from a Honda SUV, the Honda Passport has an agreeable, car-like drive. It’s smooth, quiet, and comfortable, making it drive like a minivan more than an off-road SUV, which is a good thing if you’ll spend most of your time on the pavement. The interior is upscale and uses excellent materials, especially upper trims—one reason why the Passport is on the pricey side of this segment, with a starting price over $45,000 in Canadian dollars.

The 2022 Honda Passport gets a few rugged updates. For starters, the revised styling looks more like the recently updated Honda Ridgeline. Another big update is the addition of the $49,270 TrailSport model. Honda says the Passport is its first TrailSport sub-brand vehicle, and like Subaru’s Wilderness trims, focuses on rugged off-road styling. Unfortunately, there are no mechanical upgrades to make it a better off-roader, but Honda has hinted that greater off-road capability will be introduced in future model years.

Also note, that every 2022 Passport comes with the Honda Sensing technology suite (Forward Collision Warning and Collision Mitigation, Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation and Lane Keeping Assist), and a 3-year/60,000-km comprehensive factory warranty.
