Which 2022 Kia Telluride is Right for You?

Which trim level best suits your needs if you are shopping for Kia’s popular mid-size 3-row SUV?

What is the 2022 Kia Telluride?

The 2022 Kia Telluride is indisputably a top choice in the 3-row mid-size SUV segment. It’s spacious, affordable, well-equipped, well-mannered and arguably looks good.

The Telluride shares a platform with the Hyundai Palisade. What’s the difference between the Kia and the Hyundai? Mechanically, not much. But they both come with an attractive 5-year/100,000-kilometre comprehensive warranty.

Pricing is similar between the two SUVs, including equipment and safety scores. Both vehicles’ trim levels go from classy mainstream to almost luxurious yet still value-packed. If anything, the Palisade gets a little more upscale with its top Calligraphy trim and its digital driver information display.

How much does the Kia Telluride cost?

Many 2022 Telluride buyers won’t need to go beyond the entry-level EX trim, which starts with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price in Canadian dollars of $46,995, since the most desirable safety features are standard. These include Forward Collision-avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Assist System, and Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist.

On the tech front, the Kia’s infotainment display increased in size this year to a 10.25-inch unit with a split-screen function. Navigation is also standard, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, satellite radio, and five USB ports.

What’s the Telluride’s fuel economy and performance like?

A 3.8-litre 6-cylinder gas engine propels all versions of the 2022 Telluride, delivering a gutsy 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. There is no turbo- or supercharger, just plain old natural aspiration, which is fine. An 8-speed automatic transmission deals with all the gear-shifting duties. All-wheel drive is standard.

It’s OK to use regular gasoline, but a fair amount is required. Fuel economy estimates range from 12.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city to 9.7 on the highway.

The maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) regardless of trim level.

What’s the Kia’s interior like?

You can seat up to eight in the base EX trim. The SX trims have a pair of captain’s chairs in their second row, reducing the posterior count to seven.

Average-sized adults can fit in the third row, which gives an idea of how spacious the 2022 Telluride SUV is. The seats are accessed easily, and that high roof provides plenty of headroom. Each row is a little higher than the one in front, stadium-style. Seats are comfortable, materials are classy, and the interior design has a pared-down/uptown vibe.

Luggage space behind the third-row measures 601 litres. Not bad at all. Folding down the rearmost row creates 1,304 L, and the maximum area behind the front seats is 2,455.

What are some of the Kia SUV’s best features?

Standard in the $51,995 SX trim, the Blind-spot View Monitor employs side cameras and displays their images in the instrument cluster, giving drivers a greater degree of outward vision.

When there’s a herd of kids and pets that all need corralling, a standard rear-seat alert asks the driver if someone or something is still in one of the rear seats at the end of a drive.

What's the 2022 Kia Telluride's competition?

Almost every mainstream automotive brand has a 3-row mid-size SUV in its lineup. But we'd target the Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9, Honda Pilot, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas and the Telluride's Palisade corporate cousin as the Kia's main marketplace rivals.
