Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan is Right for You?

From luxury liner to sports sedan, find out which E-Class Sedan fits your needs.

Dating back to 1993, the E-Class has been the Mercedes-Benz brand’s middleweight champ in the über-competitive mid-size luxury segment. For 2022, the current 5th-generation E-Class (that’s been around since 2016) is available as a 2-door coupe and convertible, the new-this-year All-Terrain station wagon, and our focus here, the 4-door/5-passenger sedan.

Like its predecessors, all 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class body styles ride on the same rear-wheel-drive-based platform that provides plenty of refinement, the latest in safety, and some of the most advanced automotive technology available. Climb into any E-Class Sedan and enjoy a cabin that’s plush and upmarket but not overdone. The dashboard houses a standard-issue twin-screen driver information panel/infotainment system display. There’s plenty of occupant space front, and rear. Trunk space in the sedan measures 540 litres, enough for three sets of golf clubs.

In Canada, the E-Class Sedan is offered only with traction at all four wheels via the German automaker’s 4MATIC system. It isn’t a question of getting used to how a 2022 E-Class Sedan drives. This Mercedes-Benz can be almost any machine the driver wants it to be. A trio of trims are best distinguished by what’s under their respective hoods.

Even the base E 350 4MATIC has a well-calibrated balance of poise and compliance. Adjust the available adaptive air suspension for the ideal passenger-pleaser in Comfort mode. Or set it to Sport and take the interesting roads home. With 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque from a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder gas engine mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, the E 350 is still relatively quick. Zero to 100 kilometres per hour (km/h) takes only 6.1 seconds, according to Mercedes-Benz Canada.

We have a particular fondness for the inline 6-cylinder gas engine in the mild-hybrid E 450 4MATIC trim. This 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque 3.0-litre configuration is naturally smoother than a V6. At the same time, the extra push from the electric motor is always a good thing, and results in a 4.8-seconds 0-100 km/h time.

On the subject of high-performance, the AMG E 53 4MATIC+ trim can be breathtakingly fast and precise on a track, yet remain utterly civilized and laid-back in traffic. An AMG-tweaked version of the E 450’s unit (429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque results in a 0.3-second quicker to 100 km/h time) and a host of AMG go-fast goodies, make this sedan a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

If all of the above has only whetted your appetite, Mercedes-Benz Canada offers a veritable cornucopia of extras. How about heated/ventilated/massaging front seats, cabin air/ionization/fragrance system, self-parking feature, carbon-fibre cabin trim, augmented reality for the navigation system, adaptive air suspension, partial autonomy, head-up display, powered rear window shade, and gesture control?
