Which 2022 Nissan Altima is Right for You?

Find out which trim level of Nissan’s family sedan best suits your needs.

What is the 2022 Nissan Altima?

This generation of Altima (the sixth) is still relatively fresh, having debuted for the 2019 model year. In a competitive family-sedan segment filled with big sellers like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, a lot is agreeable and pleasant about the Nissan. The interior and exterior designs, for example. One thing in its favour is that the Altima offers all-wheel drive standard, which is rare for the class.

How much does the Nissan Altima cost?

Nissan’s made it simple to decide which 2022 Altima best suits your needs with one powertrain available across three trim levels.

With a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $30,198 in Canadian dollars, the base Altima SE is relatively well-equipped. Standard gear includes a four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that sends the power to all four wheels. Safety technology includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Warning.

The mid-level Altima SR Midnight Edition is primarily a comprehensive trim package (hint: there’s a lot of black). At the same time, the top-line Platinum versions add luxury features like a premium sound system and additional driver assistance features, highlighted by Nissan’s ProPilot Assist.

What’s the Altima’s fuel economy and performance like?

All variants in the 2022 Altima range have a naturally aspirated (no turbochargers) 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine running on regular gasoline. The maximum output is 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The CVT’s fake gears can be “shifted” via steering-wheel paddle shifters available with the SR Midnight Edition. Standard AWD offers all-weather handling and driving confidence during all four Canadian driving seasons. Combined city and highway fuel economy estimates for the base SE trim are 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres, and 8.1 for the SR Midnight Edition and Platinum trims.

What’s the Nissan’s interior like?

The dashboard is pleasant enough, with user-friendly controls and a similarly easy infotainment system. All of the materials are acceptable in quality. There’s more enthusiasm for the front seats, though. They’re wonderfully comfortable, well-shaped and supportive—as good as anything in this class.

What are some of the Nissan sedan’s best features?

Branded as “Advanced Drive Assist Display”, the Altima’s standard digital driver information screen, measuring seven inches on the diagonal, takes the place of a conventional instrument cluster.

It doesn’t make the Altima a self-driving car. Still, Nissan says its ProPILOT Assist helps drivers by reducing the amount of driver acceleration, steering and braking under certain driving conditions, such as single-lane highway driving.

What's the 2022 Nissan Altima’s competition?

Despite families choosing compact SUVs, like Nissan's popular Rogue, the Altima faces stiff competition. Family sedan rivals like the Kia K5, Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry offer AWD as an option or standard equipment.
