What is the 2022 Porsche Macan?

Porsche’s classic sports cars are spectacular, but most of them aren’t very practical as family vehicles or daily commuters. After its debut in Canada as a 2015 model, buyers were quick to discover the Macan’s style, luxury, and performance. As the most affordable new vehicle with a Porsche badge, it didn’t take long for the compact luxury SUV to become Porsche’s best-selling model.

How much does the Porsche Macan cost?

The Macan slots below the mid-size Cayenne as the smaller and more affordable of the brand’s pair of 5-passenger Porsche SUVs.

For 2022, the Macan gets a facelift, and the model range has been shuffled around a bit.

There are three distinct variants. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Base Price of the entry level trim starts at $58,500 in Canadian dollars. The Porsche has some excellent standard features that help to justify its relatively high starting price compared to most rivals, such as LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, all-wheel drive, a power liftgate, 3-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, and four USB-C ports.

The standard infotainment system in the Macan is a 10.9-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and navigation. Unfortunately, Android Auto is still not available on the Macan. Standard safety tech features include front and rear parking sensors and a lane-departure warning.

Sitting above the base model is the $70,600 Macan S, which has a new twin-turbo V-6 engine for the 2022 model year. On top of the engine upgrade, the S also comes with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and upgraded brakes.

The range-topping $85,500 GTS model tops the Macan model range in terms of performance and luxury. The engine is similar to the twin-turbo V6 in the S model, but making more horsepower. It also comes with a sport exhaust system with black tailpipes, more aggressively bolstered front seats, larger wheels, unique side skirts, clear LED taillights, adaptive air suspension, Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, and a ride height that has been lowered.

As with most German luxury brands, the Macan’s starting MSRPs are there only to whet your appetite. You can add a plethora of safety tech features to the Macan (including adaptive cruise control, self-steering park assist, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring) and various performance hardware packages and custom exterior and interior features that can add thousands of dollars to the final price.

What’s the Macan’s fuel economy and performance like?

There are three gas-only engines available under the hood of the 2022 Porsche Macan. All are exciting to experience and provide an enjoyable driving experience. The bigger your budget, the more driving fun you can afford in a Macan.

The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder making 261 horsepower (up 13 from last year) and 295 pound-feet of torque. It’s the most efficient engine available in the Macan, with a combined city and highway estimate of 11.0 litres per 100 kilometres. Upgrading to the S model gets you a twin-turbo 2.9L 6-cylinder with a drastic performance improvement, turning it up to 375 hp and 383 lb-ft and a 12.2 L/100 km combined estimate. Finally, a 434-hp/406 lb-ft variant of the same twin-turbo V-6 powers the GTS model, with the same fuel economy as the S.

All-wheel drive comes standard on every Macan. Also, standard is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which delivers quick, smooth shifts.

What’s the Porsche’s interior like?

The 2022 Porsche Macan has the spirit of a sports car, but it doesn’t forget that it’s a luxury SUV. The interior of the Macan is driver-centric, but it’s also quite comfortable for the front-seat passengers. Like the standard 10.9-in infotainment system, the technology is ergonomically designed and user-friendly. Some changes to the interior for 2022 include a redesigned center console with haptic touch elements, a standard analog clock, and a shorter shift lever.

The back seats of the Macan are a little tight for adults but OK for kids. The cargo space is reasonably good but below average for this class. The Macan is unquestionably more practical than any 2-door Porsche, but if you’re looking for a lot of room and utility in a luxury SUV, consider one of the Macan’s competitors.

What are some of the Porsche SUV’s best features?

The available GTS Sport Package is all-new for 2022. It adds the contents of the Sport Chrono package, plus a sporty appearance package, carbon-fibre interior trim, sport seats, and more. Python Green is a unique colour available for Macans with the GTS Sport Package.

What's the 2022 Porsche Macan’s competition?

Although it's the most affordable new Porsche in Canada, the Macan is among the more expensive players in the compact luxury SUV segment.

There are more affordable options like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, and there are much more affordable options like the Lincoln Corsair and Acura RDX. However, none of those SUVs have the true Porsche character of the Macan.
