Which 2022 Subaru Outback is Right for You?

Find out which version of Subaru’s mid-size AWD wagon is the best for your driving needs.

The Subaru Outback continues to be an innovative and practical alternative to sedans and SUVs. The current 6th-generation Outback mid-size station wagon, introduced for the 2020 model year, offers more cargo space and ground clearance than a mid-size sedan, all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability, as well as a more sophisticated ride-and-handling package than an SUV. The result? Since it was introduced in the mid-1990s, Subaru’s rugged half-wagon, half- SUV has always been popular with Canadians.

The Outback provides plenty of room for up to five passengers and their gear, starting with its 2,144 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 920 with the seats up. Roof rails are standard, too, sitting up high with improved tie-down points and equipped with integrated, retractable crossbars that stow away when they’re unnecessary to reduce wind noise and drag. Ground clearance of 8.7 inches (220 millimetres) isn’t just a consideration when going off-road. Canadians who encounter snow every winter will also be grateful for it. With the arrival this year of the new-for-2022 Outback Wilderness trim, maximum ground clearance increases to 9.5 inches (230 millimetres).

With a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price starting at $31,195 in Canadian dollars, even the base 2022 Outback Convenience trim comes very well equipped. Standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel, 7-inch tablet-style touch screen with satellite radio with Travel Link, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

The Outback’s standard 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine provides decent power and a combined city and highway fuel economy estimate of 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). Starting with the new-for-2022 $41,995Wilderness trim, an optional turbocharged 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine is available with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque is rated at 8.2 L/100 km combined. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT ) is standard across all trims.
