What Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra?
The 2022 Tundra is an all-new full-size pickup truck with increased capabilities and a more dynamic, expressive look. While the new Tundra may not win the macho contest down at the gravel pit, the 2022 version gets a fully-boxed ladder frame, coil-spring rear suspension, modernized interior, and two new powertrains including a hybrid.
How Much Does the Toyota Tundra Cost?
With six trim levels, two cab styles (Double Cab and CrewMax configurations, each with four doors), a trio of bed lengths (Double Cab models get a 6.5-foot bed or a new 8.1-ft bed, while Crew Max trucks connect to a 5.5-ft or 6.5-ft bed), the choice of rear-wheel drive (4X2) or 4-wheel drive (4X4), plus the choice of a turbocharged gas-V6 or the same engine but electrified, there’s probably a Toyota Tundra for you.
The most basic 2022 Tundra, the 4X2 SR Double Cab with the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine, starts with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $44,990 in Canadian dollars. As a 4X4, the new Tundra SR begins at $48,290.
Tundra SR5 models begin at $52,490, while the new Tundra Limited starts at $60,490.
The luxurious Tundra Platinum trim (available only with the CrewMax cab), ranges from $72,990 to $76,590 for the Hybrid. At the same time, the top-line Capstone (also CrewMax-only) has a starting price of $84,150.
In addition, there are off-road-friendly TRD (SR, SR5, Limited), off-road-ready TRD Pro (Limited) and urban cowboy-like 1794 (Capstone) trim packages available.
All 2022 Tundra’s get Toyota Canada’s 3-year/60,000-kilometre limited factory warranty.
What Are the Tundra’s Power and Fuel Economy Ratings?
The 2022 Tundra does not offer a V8 engine; a unique distinction among the current crop of full-size pickup truck models. Instead, you’ll find a new i-Force V6 which provides more power and torque than the outgoing V8.
Indeed, the V6 engine is no slouch, tuned to produce 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission sends power, delivering 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined city/highway estimates with 4X2 and 12.2 with 4X4 versions.
Available on the Limited, Platinum, and Capstone trims, the first-ever Tundra Hybrid arrives with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid twin-turbo V6 engine producing significantly more power and torque than its non-hybrid counterpart: up to 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. The Hybrid also returns slightly better fuel economy with an 11.7 L/100 km combined estimate.
The Tundra’s maximum towing capacity is 12,000-pound (5,440 kg) when properly equipped.
What’s the Toyota’s Interior Like?
Inside the 2022 Tundra, a wide horizontal dash looks and feels far more premium than the outgoing Tundra's design, with higher grades of materials. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, with a giant 14-inch center display available. A combination analog/digital instrument panel with a 4.1-inch multi-information display at the center is standard, while a 12.3-inch TFT digital instrument panel is available (standard on upper trim levels).
The second row in the CrewMax version is positively SUV-like, with tons of legroom and headroom, comfortable seating (especially for the outboard positions), and amenities like USB power and bottle pockets in the doors.
The interior changes a bit like the exterior design depending on the trim. The Limited trim has SofTex faux leather seats, and every other trim of the Tundra Hybrid has genuine leather. The TRD Pro package has a more rugged interior with numerous TRD touches. Thanks to a laminated acoustic windshield, the Capstone's cabin is remarkably quiet. The Capstone also has a unique two-tone leather interior, and exclusive 1794 package that offers a choice of Saddle Brown or Rich Cream leather plus American walnut trim.
One of our favourite parts of the 2022 Tundra’s interior is the 14-inch infotainment system, which is standard on the Limited model and above. It's user-friendly, has good voice-control integration, and has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also has built-in Apple Music, which means you don't even need your iPhone in the truck to enjoy your tunes.
It's worth mentioning that the non-hybrid CrewMax Tundra models have convenient under-seat storage in the back. However, this space is taken up by the hybrid battery in the Tundra Hybrid.
What is One of the Toyota Full-size Pickup Truck’s Best Features?
SHEET-MOLDED COMPOUND BED: A composite bed, supported by an aluminum structure, is standard on all Tundra models. Not only does this bed weigh less than a steel bed, but it is also more resistant to scratching and denting, won’t rust, and doesn’t need painting.
What’s the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s Competition?
Among its competitors are the light-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins, Ford F-150, Nissan Titan, and Ram 1500.
