Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos is Right for You?

Discover which trim of Volkswagen’s newest (and smallest) SUV best fits your needs.

If you’re asked what’s the most affordable new Volkswagen with a hatchback and answered “Golf,” you’d be wrong. With a starting price under $27,000 in Canada, the all-new 2022 Volkswagen Taos sub-compact SUV is the correct answer, as the new 8th-generation Golf compact hatchback now comes exclusively in the sporty GTI and sportier R trims with prices starting over $30,000.

Slipping under the compact Tiguan and mid-size Atlas, the Taos is the smallest SUV in VW’s current lineup. The only engine choice is an excellent, turbocharged 1.5-litre 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and a healthy 184 pound-feet of torque. The $26,695 base Trendline trim comes with front-wheel-drive (FWD) and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Starting at $29,195, available all-wheel-drive (AWD) uses an electro-hydraulic center clutch pack and can send as much as 50 percent of the power to the VW’s rear wheels using a dual-clutch automatic with seven gears.

The topline AWD $36,695 Highline trim, is for buyers looking for luxury features like ventilated seats or a large sunroof.

Fuel economy for AWD versions of the Taos are rated for an estimated 7.4 L/100 km on the highway and 9.5 in the city, with front-drive models at 6.6/8.4, and regular 87-octane can be used.

Inside, you’ll find the new 5-passenger Taos has an understated but elegant interior. VW’s digital gauges are standard, as are heated front seats, alloy wheels, and the standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment is upgradable to VW’s latest infotainment system that features an 8.0-inch screen along with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Given the small size of the Taos, the interior space is excellent. Overall interior volume is only slightly less than the Tiguan. A large adult can easily fit behind a driver of the same height, even when a sunroof is optioned. Behind the rear seat, there are 790 litres of luggage space in the new VW Taos, which increases to 1,866 L when the second row is folded down.

Also note, that every 2022 Taos comes with a 4-year/80,000-km factory warranty. That’s more comprehensive than most mainstream-brand rivals like the Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, Subaru Crosstrek, or the new-for-2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.
