2021 Cadillac CT4 Highlights

Replacing the ATS last year as the least expensive Cadillac, the 2021 CT4 is the General Motors luxury brand’s latest entry in the highly-competitive compact luxury/sports sedan segment. 

Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices start at $36,198 (all prices in Canadian dollars) for the base, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 2021 CT4 Luxury trim that is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine making 237 horsepower. The only engine option is a larger, 2.7-litre turbo-4 that makes 310 horsepower plus a version exclusive to the topline $45,998 CT4 V Series that produces 15 horsepower more. The smaller of the two engines is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.7 unit gets a 10-speed auto box. All-wheel-drive (AWD) is available in all trims and with both engines, starting at $38,998. Across the board, the Cadillac’s fuel economy estimates are better than in the more powerful Genesis rival.

Pleasant, but not exactly ground-breaking, that’s the cabin of the 5-passenger 2021 Cadillac CT4. Accommodations for the front occupants are relatively roomy and designed to cater to the driver first and foremost. The optional rotary infotainment controller in the $39,198 Premium Luxury trim (standard in the CT4-V Series) has been updated for 2021 and makes it easy to access the audio, navigation, and other functions.

The 2021 Cadillac CT4 delivers a nice balance between a comfortable ride and sporty handling with an engaging driving experience. The RWD setup—and the car’s relatively light weight—give the CT4 an authentic sports sedan feel. 

Switching between the CT4’s Tour and Sport modes changes the character noticeably. Tour mode is excellent for everyday driving; the Sport setting adjusts the throttle and transmission for faster reactions. To add more “sport” to its luxury sports sedan equation, the high-performance CT4-V Series adds Race mode and launch control for the transmission, plus Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, and the Performance Traction Management system (also used in the Chevrolet Corvette sports car) as standard.

2021 Genesis G70 Highlights

Introduced for the 2019 model year, the 2021 Genesis G70 brings convincing sports-sedan handling, a long list of standard features, and the best warranty in its class. 

All 2021 G70 trim levels offer traction at all four wheels, starting with the base $43,000 2.0T Advanced AWD trim that also gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder producing 252 horsepower. A 365 horsepower turbocharged 3.3-litre V6 is only available on the topline Prestige trim, starting at $56,000. Both engines are hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Even the least expensive 2021 Genesis G70 has a generous amount of standard equipment that more than makes up for its higher base price over its Cadillac rival. Like hands-free trunk lid operation, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 8-way front passenger seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control. 

Compared to the Cadillac’s system, the G70’s 8-inch touch screen and infotainment system and its controls are easier to see and use. The overall ergonomics are well thought out, and the G70 offers more room for passengers than the CT4. 

All G70 trims have an array of active safety and driver assistance features, including forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control with stop/go. You’ll need to pack light, though. There are less than 300 litres of cargo space in the G70’s trunk.

Value is one thing; driving pleasure is another. The G70’s AWD system is commendable and works remarkably well in slippery or snowy conditions or when pushed hard on dry pavement. Another crucial factor when choosing a sports sedan is ride and handling. The G70 achieves a superb balance between poise and plushness, with some information coming up through the steering wheel, but not too much for a luxury car. Then there’s the warranty—all Genesis models are covered for up to 5 years or 100,000 kilometres.

 

Final Recommendation

Compared to the traditional German rivals, the 2021 Cadillac CT4 and 2021 Genesis G70 compact luxury sports sedans both offer a lot of value.

Its rear- or all-wheel-drive availability sets the Cadillac apart, as does its lighter weight, decent fuel economy estimates, and driver-focused cabin.

That said, we think the Genesis is the better compact luxury sports sedan choice. The G70 is exceptionally well equipped, has greater power in its standard form, offers even more power with the available turbo-V6 plus its best-in-class warranty.
