First Look 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV

Chevrolet’s Bolt EV gets a refresh and a new larger EUV companion model for 2022.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV electric compact hatchback gets a refresh and a significant price drop for the 2022 model year. The update improves the 5-passenger Bolt’s cabin comfort but does nothing for its range. A larger Chevy Bolt EUV (Electric Utility vehicle) will also join the lineup.

“We are committed to making EVs accessible for everyone, and the new Bolt EUV and redesigned Bolt EV are giving customers more choices and reasons to switch to electric,” said Scott Bell, president and managing director, GM Canada. “Canadian teams played an active role in the development and testing of the new Bolt EUV including Canadian Technical Centre engineers who worked on the Super Cruise1 system—a first for Chevrolet and the cold weather durability testing that was done at our Kapuskasing Proving Grounds in northern Ontario.”

According to Chevrolet, the front-wheel-drive Bolt electric vehicle (EV) has led the charge in putting more drivers in electric vehicles. Since its market introduction in 2017, worldwide sales have topped 100,000 copies, with over 13,000 Bolt EV sales in Canada so far.

What’s new?

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

The refreshed 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV sports a new face. It's more upright, with a body-colour panel sitting over the low, fake grille. The change makes it look a bit more "electric" than the prior generation, which could have been mistaken for a gas-powered car. Thin LED daytime running lights sit above the reconfigured headlights. But the sheet metal has, otherwise, changed little.

Inside, upgrades are more pronounced. The dash features softer, higher-quality materials. The change, along with new seats and a new 10.2-inch touchscreen, addresses many of the old Bolt's major complaints.

Chevrolet is also making charging more convenient with a new Dual Level Charge Cord, which comes standard on the Bolt EUV and is available on the Bolt EV. Chevrolet claims the Dual Level Charge Cord could eliminate the need to purchase a separate level 2 charging unit for home charging for many customers. It has a changeable plug that allows the customer to plug into a standard 120-volt three-prong outlet for Level 1 charging and a 240-volt outlet for Level 2 charging.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Does the updated 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV seem like the EV you want, but you’re worried it’s a little too small? Then consider the new 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV.

Essentially a larger Bolt, the EUV is so similar to the standard Bolt EV that it might as well be a trim level of the smaller car, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the EUV outsell the standard version because of its added space.

Outside, the two cars share no sheet metal but are siblings. The tall, slightly awkward lines of the Bolt EV work much better on the larger EUV, with an extra 16.1
centimetres of length to visually balance the design. Thin LED daytime running lights sit above the headlights, while accent lines in the trunk give it a bit of personality.

Inside, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV’s cabin is more upscale than the exterior might lead you to believe. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with the 10.2-inch infotainment screen, and conventional buttons are still present for the HVAC controls. A push-button system takes the place of a shifter, creating a roomier feel. The Bolt EUV has 8 centimetres more legroom for rear-seat passengers than the Bolt EV.

Along with broadening the brand’s EV lineup, the topline Bolt EUV Premier trim will also be the first Chevrolet vehicle to offer Super Cruise1, a driver assistance system that Chevrolet says is the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance system for divided and compatible highways.

What’s the same?

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Mechanically, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV is essentially the 2021 Bolt. A single electric motor sends 200 horsepower to the front wheels. . The estimated electric driving range remains 417 kilometres.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV works with the same powertrain as its smaller sibling. The added length, GM says, adds only 35 kilograms of weight over the Bolt EV, so the performance should be similar. And performance has never been a complaint with the Bolt, so we’d expect it to remain more than serviceable stoplight-to-stoplight.

The new, slightly larger Bolt EUV’s electric driving range is an estimated 402 kilometres, 15-km less than the standard Bolt. That’s easily more than most drivers need most days and fairly standard in the growing class of mainstream EVs.

When will it go on sale?

Chevrolet says both the new 2022 Bolt EV and EUV will go on sale this summer.

How much will it cost?

In Canada, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV will have a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $38,198 CDN. That’s $6,800 CDN less than the 2021 model.

The new 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV’s MSRP starts at $40,1983 CDN.
