First Look: 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The first-ever full-size luxury SUV gets resurrected for 2022

Dating back to 1984, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is considered the first American full-size luxury SUV, created from the standard Wagoneer, part of the brand's lineup since 1963. The new model returns to do battle with a field that has become considerably more crowded since the original Grand Wagoneer's demise in 1991. Presented in concept form, Jeeps says the new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasts both capability and opulence. This newest Jeep will go on sale in the first half of 2021 and spawn a lower-priced Wagoneer model.

While little has been announced about the powertrains, which we suspect will include an eTorque hybrid version of FCA's 5.7-litre Hemi V8, Jeep did say that a plug-in hybrid setup will also be in the lineup. If it's the same as the Pacifica Hybrid, expect a V6 engine with a battery pack and electric motors. The fully-independent suspension and body-on-frame construction promise good ride characteristics and exceptional off-road and towing performance. The V8 models will mate to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

How much will the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer cost?

Pricing for production versions in Canada has not been announced, but we expect the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer to be competitively priced with full-size luxury SUV rivals like the $96,000 CDN Lincoln Navigator and $87,698 CDN Cadillac Escalade.

The less expensive Wagoneer version will employ the same architecture, but with less features. Rivals include the $56,398 CDN Chevrolet Tahoe, $62,500 CDN Ford Expedition, and $50,700 CDN GMC Yukon.

Off-road capability

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be based on the independent suspension and body-on-frame construction of the Ram 1500 full-size pickup truck, and offer three 4×4 systems. Jeep will also offer the Quadra-Lift air suspension as an option. Today's Jeep Grand Cherokee models using the suspension have five ride height modes that allow for over 10 centimetres range of adjustable ground clearance.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Interior

Jeep is looking to the new Grand Wagoneer's interior to establish its luxury bona fides. Stitched leather seating, aluminum, wood, and onyx glass accents (all touted as being sustainable because of their recyclability) add to the concept's highly-crafted cabin. Jeep says the 2-spoke steering wheel pays homage to the original. The Grand Wagoneer offers seating for up to 7 passengers on three rows, with two bucket seats up front, two captain's chairs on the second row, and a 3-passenger bench in the rear.

In addition to the materials' bespoke nature, the cabin also has an airy feel thanks to the large, single pane glass roof, which we suspect will be an option.

Technology is also at the forefront. Jeep says the Grand Wagoneer has more than 45 square inches of display screens in the front cockpit. This array includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display ahead of the driver, a 12.1-inch horizontal infotainment display in the centre of the dash atop a 10.25-inch screen controlling cabin comfort, including seat adjustments and HVAC. On the passenger side is another 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Rear seat passengers also have about 30 inches of screen to play with, including two 10.1-inch entertainment screens attached to the rear of the front buckets and a centre 10.25-inch screen on the console between the two captain's chairs controlling rear seat comfort.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Exterior

The Grand Cherokee concept's most recognizable feature is its traditional Jeep 7-slot grille flanked by thin LED headlights. The grille itself features LED detailing between the slots giving it the look of stitching around the elements.

The large glass area of the original Jeep Grand Wagoneer influences the oversize daylight opening of the greenhouse. However, comparisons between the original 1984 version and the new full-size 2022 Grand Wagoneer end there. The shape of the new model is more slab-sided and blockier. The first Grand Wagoneer had a sportier look thanks to thin pillars and a more svelte cross-section to the body with a curve in the side panels. And while the original was either revered or reviled for its faux wood exterior, the new model pays tribute to that look by using real teak in the roof-rack tie-downs.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Standard Features

The Grand Wagoneer concept is presented with massive 24-inch wheels. We expect production models to offer 20-inch rims and LED lighting as standard equipment. The interior looks production-ready, so we can expect the leather interior, use of real aluminum and wood trim, the multi-screen setup with Uconnect 5 infotainment, 7-passenger seating with 2nd-row captain’s chairs, tri-zone climate control, standard 4-wheel drive, and V8-power to appear on the production version.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Options

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer concept boasts a large single pane glass roof, which we expect will be an option along with the 23-speaker McIntosh audio and the rear twin-screen entertainment system. Other features will be step-up 4-wheel drive systems and the Quadra-Lift air suspension.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Safety Technology

As the Jeep lineup flagship, we expect the production version of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer to carry a full complement of safety and driver assists as standard equipment. Among them will be forward-collision alert and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist, as well as front and rear park assist.

Canadian-market pricing, powertrain details about the new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be released closer to the large SUV’s on-sale date, sometime in 2021.
