Sibling Rivalry: 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe versus 2022 Chevrolet Traverse

Which of these Chevrolet siblings is the best choice if shopping for a 3-row SUV?


When it comes to handing all four Canadian driving seasons, plus loads of people and their gear, there’s nothing like an all-wheel-drive (AWD) SUV with three rows of seats. Thankfully, General Motors’ Chevrolet brand offers two similar but distinctive siblings for buyers looking for such a vehicle.

The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe full-size SUV is thriving one year into a new generation. Yes, it’s still based on a truck (the Chevrolet Silverado 1500) and uses a traditional body-on-frame construction. But it has more space and a comfier ride than ever before, plus impressive towing abilities, as well as a decent amount of modern tech.

The mid-size 2022 Chevrolet Traverse competes in the heart of the family-SUV market yet has an advantage over rivals in size and cargo capacity. It is larger than competitors and, thanks to a price that historically starts lower, appeals to families and active individuals who appreciate a lot of metal for the money. With its update for 2022, the Traverse has rectified prior downsides. Notably, all models now include a suite of active safety features.

So which one to choose? Read on to find out which of these Chevrolet 3-row SUV siblings is just right for you.



Through six trim levels, the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price in Canadian dollars for the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe starts at $57,748 for the 8-passenger LS 2WD (rear-wheel-drive) trim. Standard gear highlights include a 5.3-litre 8-cylinder gas engine, Premium Smooth Ride suspension, 18-inch wheels, luggage rack side rails, and front and rear park assist. All Tahoes get a 10-speed automatic transmission. Traction at all four wheels (4WD) starts at $61,048.

Starting with the $63,648 Tahoe LT 2WD trim, 2nd-row captain’s chairs make for 7-passenger seating. The priciest Tahoe is the High Country 4WD, with either a 3.0-litre diesel for $82,748 or a 6.2-litre V8 for $100 more, unique front grille, sill plates and interior stitching, 22-inch wheels, and an adaptive ride suspension standard.

With only one powertrain (a gas-V6 matched to a 9-speed automatic transmission and AWD), pricing for the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is less complicated (and substantially less overall) than its full-size sibling. 

Like the Tahoe, there are a half-dozen Traverse trim levels, starting with the base, 8-passenger $39,498 LS. Standard equipment includes Chevrolet’s Safety Assist suite, 8-way power driver’s seat, and remote vehicle start. Also, like the Tahoe, 7-passenger seating is available. The topline $60,298 High Country trim gets 20-inch wheels, power-folding 3rd-row seating, and a trailer package with Hitch Guidance and Hitch View, among other goodies.

Last year's redesign of the Tahoe created a lot more rear space. The back two rows offer more overall passenger space than the Traverse. The area behind the Tahoe's 3rd-row provides plenty of room for hockey gear, as much as 722 litres compared to 651 in the Traverse. The Tahoe's cargo volume expands to 2,056 litres when the rear seat folds, versus 1,637 in its sibling. Seat coverings range from durable cloth to perforated leather. A powered, movable center console (it slides forward and back) is another standard feature in the upper Tahoe trims and optional in the trims below.

Although not as voluminous as its full-size sibling, the mid-size Traverse offers class-leading interior space. The last row is best suited for kids. But the driver and passenger seats provide more room than the Tahoe, and 2nd-row occupants enjoy more headroom. The Traverse’s layout and technology don’t feel as fresh as the Tahoe, but the Traverse’s functions are logical and straightforward to use. This year, an optional 8-inch digital display in the instrument cluster complements the standard central touchscreen display, plus available wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Performance & Fuel Economy

A trio of large displacement engines power the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. Choices start with a 5.3-litre V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A 6.2-litre V8 with 420-hp and 460 lb-ft is optional, as is a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. 

The lone Traverse engine is a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder that provides 310 hp and 266 lb-ft. The Traverse’s V6 impresses with its good power and works well with the standard 9-speed automatic transmission.

Regardless of the powertrain, the Tahoe can tow more. From a low of 8,000-pounds/3,629 kilograms with the 4WD diesel to up to 8,400 lb/3,810 kg with the 5.3L 2WD trim. The Traverse’s 5,000 lb/2,268 kg maximum towing capacity is, similar to mid-size rivals like the Kia Telluride and Toyota Highlander.

Based on the combined city and highway estimates, the Tahoe diesel 2WD trim's 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres and 10.6 in 4WD estimates beat the AWD Traverse's 11.8 rating. But if you compare gas-only engines, the Traverse betters the 2WD Tahoe's 5.3L's 13.2 and 13.5 4WD numbers.

Ride and Handling

If anyone has experience being in an earlier generation of the Tahoe and decided they need something with a better ride quality, check out this new version. This latest generation ditches the old solid rear axle for an independent setup that’s far more sophisticated and refined. It can be improved even more by the optional Magnetic Ride Control (available in the higher trims), deploying electronically adjustable shock absorbers with near-instantaneous responses to the driving conditions of the moment. In tandem with the adaptive air suspension (also available in pricier versions of the new Tahoe), ride comfort attains luxury-car levels.

Like nearly every other 3-row SUV except for the Mazda CX-9 or Ford Explorer ST, Traverse models haven't been known as athletic. But that isn't the point of such an SUV. As a family hauler, you'll find the Traverse quiet and roomy enough to keep squabbling siblings at bay. Chevrolet's latest vehicles excel in terms of dynamic tuning. From how the steering and brakes respond to input and feel when used to how the suspension virtually eliminates wallow and provides remarkably athletic handling—the Chevy Traverse is good to drive. Better yet, in urban situations, this character makes it feel smaller and more maneuverable than the more cumbersome Tahoe.

With room for plenty of people and their gear, and the ability to handle unpredictable Canadian driving conditions, 3-row SUVs like these Chevy siblings remain popular choices for plenty of reasons.

If price and the ability to chauffeur around up to eight people and get decent fuel economy from a gas engine is a priority, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a capable vehicle. 

However, this sibling rivalry comes down to a “you get what you pay for” equation.

If your budget can handle the elevated prices, the full-size 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe offers more choice under its hood than its mid-size sibling, the ability to tow more, a roomier 3rd row and cargo space, and sophisticated suspensions.
